EXPRESSING SYMPATHY

  • It’s an expression or feeling of pity and sorrow when we know and see someone or people are unlucky or have trouble and in bad condition. By expressing sympathy we want to show our concern of carefulness to other people’s condition.

  • To express our sympathy, we can say it directly to him/her or use a letter or card by post also by Short Message Service (SMS), television, radio, e-mail, and newspaper.

  • Example :

A : “What’s the matter?”
B : “Oh, I hurt my neck!”
A: “That’s scary!”


  • Common adjective to express sympathy :

That’s awful!
That’s too bad!
That’s bad!
That’s ghastly!
That’s lousy!
That’s scary!
That’s very bad!
That’s rotten!
That’s terrifying!
That’s frightful!
That’s dreadful!
That’s horrible!

LINGUISTIC
·         Linguistic : ilmu yang mempelajari tentang bahasa
·         Linguistic divided into some components. They are :
a.      Phonology           : Ilmu yang mempelajari tentang bunyi
b.      Morphology        : Ilmu yang mempelajari tentang kata
c.       Syntax                 : Ilmu yang mempelajari tentang hubungan antar kalimat
d.      Semantis             : Ilmu yang mempelajari tentang makna/arti

A.     FIGURATIVE ALNGUANGE (Majas)
Divide into :
1.      SIMILE -> a way of describing something by compare something else using ‘like’ or ‘as’
Ex :

2.      METAPHOR -> a way of describing something by comparing  to something else (without using ‘like or ‘as’)
Ex :      # He has a heart of stone
           # You are my sunshine
3.      PERSONIFICATION -> to compare something inanimete objects as it it had human
Characteristic
Ex :       * The flowers danced in the wind
   * The friendly gate welcomed us
4.      ALLITERATION -> repetition of the first consonant sounds
Ex :      @ She sells seashells by the seashore

5.      ONOMATOPOEIA -> the used of a word to describeto imitate a natural sound or the sound
made by an object or an action
Ex : > PRANGGGG!!!! (sound of the broken plate or vase)
 > BRUKKK!!!! ( sound of someone fell down)

6.      HYPERBOLE -> an exaggeration that is so dramatic that no one would believe the statement
Ex : he was so hungry. He ate that whole corn field

7.      IDIOMS -> group of words whose meaning is different from the ordinary meaning of the
Words
Ex : a piece of cake : easy (mudah)
Bite your tounge : sudah...... diamlah
Slip my tounge : keceplosan
An arm and a leg : mahal banget
By God : Masya Allah / Ya Tuhan!
Chicken : penakut
Flat broke : tidak punya uang
Gimme a break : capek deh! Yang benar saja!
Give a big hand : tepuk tangan
Hang it there : sabar
How odd : tumben
Hands off : jangan pegang aku
I am bellyfull : aku kekenyangan
Just by chance : kebetulan aja
In hot water : dalam masalah besar

INVITATION



INVITATION
·                Invitation digunakan untuk mengundang orang agar datang ke acara kita.
·                Invitation dibagi menjadi dua :
1.             Spoken invitation
Spoken invitation : mengundang seseorang dengan cara memberitahu lewat
lisan atau berbicara
A.             Formal
Biasanya digunakan untuk mengundang seseorang yang lebih tua.
 Expression :
a.      Would you come to my birthday party tonight ?
b.      Could you come to my graduation party tomorrow?
c.       Would you mind to come to my warm house party this afternoon?

ACCEPTING
a.             I’m glad if I can attend your party tonight

REFUSING
a.             It’s going to be fun there! But, I’m so sorry I can’t come.
b.             It’s great! But, sorry I can’t join there
c.              Thank you for invite me. But, sorry I can’t attend your party.

B.             Informal
Biasanya kita mengundang dengan cara ini pada kawan-kawan sebaya, atau yang lebih muda pada kita.
EXPRESSION :
a.      Will you join me to come to my barbeque party tonight?
b.      Can you join us to my warm house party tomorrow?
c.       Will you join me to celebrate my graduation on my graduation party tonight?

ACCEPTING :
a.      I’m sure I can be there. It’s gonna be fun there!  
b.      Don’t worry! I’ll make time for you

REFUSING :
a.      Sorry I can’t attend to your party tonight.
b.      It’s going to be fun, but I’m really have a business to managed.  

2.             Writing Invitation
Writing Invitation : digunakan untuk mengundang ornag dengan cara ditulis di
undangan dan undangan tersebut diberikan kepada orang
yang akan kita undang.
A.             Formal             : biasanya digunakan untuk mengundang orang-orang penting
